VERBALISMS Magazine, a glossy new print publication about women in hip-hop music and culture, has hit newsstands around the globe. VERBALISMS has already established itself as a key representative of the female hip-hop population through its online portal VERBALISMS.com. The magazine announced in October 2004 that it would raise its profile by shifting into the world of print. Not only has the print edition of VERBALISMS attracted new readers, but it has also begun growing its existing online readership.

Editor-in-Chief, Raquel Wilson, who has overseen the publication since its debut on the World Wide Web over two years ago, leads the Chicago-based periodical. The magazine includes a talented collective of editors, contributors, and visual artists from the Chicago area as well as a few international locations. The magazine’s impressive list of contributors for the first issue include Laina Dawes, Sara McCool and Vanessa Manglinong, as well as Delphine Fawundu-Buford and Zenobia Simmons whose previous work have appeared in The Source.

In the first issue of the 5.5 x 4.25, quarterly publication, readers can expect to read features on Lady Bug Mecca, formerly of the hip-hop group Digable Planets, women in graffiti, in addition to female emcees from the UK. The magazine, which acquired independent distribution last year, can now be found in clothing boutiques, as well as independent record stores and bookstores across the United States, Canada, the UK and South Africa.
